Classic Apple Crisp

apple crisp 2PinitI don’t mess around with crispy things.

Except for potato chips and all other fried foods.

But when it comes to things that should be soft, like my flat-ironed hair, or my workout socks (TMI but I’m leaving it and thanks for not judging), or those addicting Oreo brownies that I can’t stop eating… I said it before and I’ll say it again: crispy’s just not my thang.

But friends, butter and sugar always wins in the end.  Always.  Even when the recipe says “crisp”.

And although I’m sitting here in apple crisp heaven with a little sugar sticking to my fingers and could potentially forget everything else in the world, I need to know one thing.

Who the heck named this delicious thing “apple crisp” when it’s really not even crispy?  It’s soft, sweet, and perfectly chunky in a wonderful butter/sugar way.  And it’s just chunky enough for easy crust snatching when you happen to casually walk by the pan for the third time.  Which we both know really means the sixth time.

It’s not fall without apple crisp.

  1. This looks gorgeous! And heavenly and delicious and all those wonderful things. Can’t wait for our weather to cool down so that we can have yummy things like this! In the meantime, while everyone else celebrates fall, where I live in CA it seems we’re finally celebrating summer!

  2. Tis the season! And because crisps are topped with oats…definitely breakfast! :) Have a great weekend Lindsay!

  3. Yum, I’m so happy for fall and delicious warm apple desserts

  4. Workout socks *must* be soft! That’s so not TMI. It’s just a fact.

Also I am kind of sad this wasn’t my breakfast today. Yum. (One question: the recipe says “oatmeal”–do I need to cook the old-fashioned oats first? Or can I use the uncooked old-fashioned version, the way you do for oatmeal cookies, etc.?)

  5. This looks delish!!! So perfectly seasonal :)

And BTW, I have been meaning to comment that the new site design looks wonderful, and I so love that you now have ads going to a cause as well!!! (I couldn’t figure out how to comment there so I’m commenting here :) ) You guys are awesome!!!

    • There better be SOME good reason for why I have ads for shutterstock and activia yogurt stealing the top half of my page. :) Thanks for planting the seed!

  6. I would totally eat this for breakfast! Apple crisp definitely embodies Fall – it’s my favorite season, that’s for kicking it off with a yummy recipe!

  7. Looks and sounds so yummy! Can’t wait to try it!

  8. Beautiful photos! You’re getting better and better! I am so totally in love with crisps! You forgot to top it with vanilla ice cream!

    • Thanks Lauren! And I didn’t forget about the vanilla ice cream – it was just all gone by the time I thought about pictures! :)

I swear, every recipe of yours looks divine! Apple crisp is the true introduction to fall. Looks so yummy! Good thing a sweet high-schooler is trying to get me to buy a 2lb bag of apples for her band fundraiser–I’ll put those granny smiths to good use!

    • Aw, sweet! Are you guys still in Florida? I think I would have a hard time making apple crisp if “fall” meant 80 degrees and sunshine! Actually, no I wouldn’t.

  10. This looks gorgeous! Your pictures are just drool-worthy!

  11. I love everything about this…and especially the individual ramekin portions. Can I have two? :)

  12. ….Its my pre-teens favorite breakfast (without caramel)…and i NEVER tell them that i also occasionally smuggle it occasionally for lunch! oooh… and lots of nutmeg for my taste! Thanks!

    • Yum! I thought about adding more cinnamon and nutmeg too… I’m sure that would taste great! This time I had to stick with my grandma’s tried and true recipe, though!

  13. Very delicious recipe for Fall or anytime. I would love this with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

  14. YUM…perfect for the Fall!

  15. Beautiful photos! No judgment on the socks. Happens to all of us!

  16. I am ALWAYS looking for new breakfast ideas, especially ones that incorporate oatmeal and fruit. These look great to me! I’m adding them to my to-do list! Thanks for sharing

  17. Yes please! This looks and sounds delicious!

    Great post x

This looks great, and I just tried to bake this. For some reason, my end result turned out really watery — at least a cup of syrupy liquid. I’m a total newbie at baking, so I’m trying to troubleshoot for the next time. I used gala apples, and I can’t believe it’s not butter. Would those affect the watery-ness of recipe? Also, there was only 1 tablespoon of flour on the ingredient list added to the apples, but not the crust sprinkled on top with the baking soda, so I was wondering if somehow there had been a typo? Thanks!

BTW, it still tasted great even though it was a little watery!

  19. About to make this! Wish me luck.

  20. This looks so good! I was just wondering if you could let it sit in the fridge for a while before you cook it or if you should cook it and then put it in the fridge and warm it up later?

    • I would cook it and warm it up later. It’s actually REALLY good after sitting in the fridge for a day or two. Even cold.

i love the honest humor in your instructions!

  22. Love this… but why did mine come out runny?

  23. MMMMM this apple crisp looks delish! I will be making it with my little Princess.
