Healthy Double Chocolate Malt

6 reviews / 5 average

I hope our new apartment comes with a blender because I plan to make an ultra thick and creamy healthy double chocolate malt every morning in the Philippines. Chocolate for breakfast yo.

I’ve gotta be honest with you guys.

Searching for a home abroad (when you’re not physically abroad yet) can be a little weird. Think House Hunters International, via the internet, with more marital stress and less money. I mean, I was fully committed to at least three different places all within the same hour and when I changed my mind for the 4th time, Bjork went for a drive to McDonald’s. At least we have some stress management tactics.

Double chocolate malt with bananas, tofu, almond milk, and cocoa in a glass with chocolate chips.

To avoid emotional and physical meltdowns at the airport, we had planned to leave all our stuff here and find a furnished apartment that would have everything we’d need. Silverware, desks, espresso makers… that sort of thing.

But then we found out that “furnished” apartments are those that come with refrigerators, stoves, and beds. And maybe air conditioners and definitely not water heaters. Extra sweating and shorter showers. This is turning out to be a real adventure after all.

If someone is going to have to haul my blender over there in a suitcase with a cooler of malt ingredients in order for me to have a healthy double chocolate malt every morning, I volunteer my husband. Because these malts are BOMB. Wait, I think I said that about the pasta.

  1. Why am I using phrases from 1995?
  2. Annoying.

Here are some pics of our new soon-to-be apartment!

This is the kitchen. And the living room.  And pretty much the whole place.  Small, clean, and perfect.

This is the view that I’ll look at when sipping my third double chocolate malt of the day.

And this, obviously, is making my heart go wild.

I can’t wait to hold this precious little buddy and spoonfeed him a double chocolate malt.  We’re friends already, I can just feel it.

Healthy Double Chocolate Malt

Description

This healthy double chocolate malt is made with bananas, tofu, almond milk, and cocoa. So thick and creamy and healthier than the original!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 small frozen bananas, slightly thawed
  • 5 ounces (half a block) firm tofu
  • 1/4 cup chocolate almond milk
  • 23 tablespoons sugar, honey, or sweetener (I used Truvia)
  • 12 tablespoons cocoa (I used less because mine was dark cocoa)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 tablespoons malted milk powder

Instructions

  1. Blend the bananas, tofu, milk, and sugar until smooth. Add the cocoa and blend again until smooth. Add the vanilla and malted milk powder.
  2. Pour into 2 glasses and serve topped with malted milk powder or chocolate chips.
  • Prep Time: 5 mins
  • Cook Time: 5 mins
  • Category: Dessert
  • Cuisine: American

Keywords: healthy chocolate malt, malt recipe, chocolate malt

I promise that in all my the malts that I ate/drank/slurped, I did not detect any weird tofu taste.

It was more like 100% creamy, chocolatey, and yummy.

That place looks perfect! I can’t imagine how hard it would be to find a place so far away. What did we ever do before the internet???
Maybe you could ship your blender overseas and it will be waiting for you when you get there.

I know! We are so lucky that the people who work at the orphanage there are helping us get set up with our lease and also furniture, which is a huge help. And I might just need to do that. It’s worth the $1,000 shipping. 🙂

I know! That’s my favorite thing about it (so far… I guess it’s hard to have a favorite part when I haven’t even been there yet!)

Wow, how exciting! As things are starting to fall into place for you and you have a lot of details to still work out, it’s a good thing that you have a healthy chocolate treat to help manage stress!
Oh, and I just want to hug the little guy! Adorable!

I’m happy you found a place! I’ve tried finding apartments from abroad too. It’s not very fun. Love the view. 🙂

And this malt looks super yummy but I’m scared of tofu. I bought some but a week after it expired, I put it in the freezer. I just couldn’t deal with it. And it’s still sitting in there. If I work up the courage, I’ll take it out one day and make this, but with raspberries. It looks so creamy!

Thanks! We are kinda excited about the view, too! 🙂 Don’t fear the tofu. When it’s all blended in, you don’t even notice a difference.

Your new appartment looks beautiful! I can see how stressful this process must be, but you guys are doing such a great deed and I’m envious that you get to travel to a new and culturally-rich place. I want to hug your malt. What? I just woke up, but that’s the honest truth – I want to give it a hug and welcome it into my belly.

How exciting!! This is going to be such a fabulous adventure and it must make it feel a little more “real” now that you have a home.

Also, I always think it’s crazy that none of the homes on House Hunters International have appliances! After moving, going out and buying a fridge immediately is the last thing you want to do!

Hi Lindsay, I came across your blog by way of a friend and let me tell you, HOLY COW! I’ve made quite a few of your recipes already and my friends and family love them – Healthy Sweet Potato Skins, Light BBQ Chicken Pizza, Chicken Tamale Pie – YUM! This chocolate malt sounds amazing and I can’t wait to try it! As for your blender, have you thought if the Phillippines use 120 or 220 power? (I’m not sure which they use) if they are 220, your blender wouldn’t work there without a converter. Just something to ponder….while you slurp up a healthy double chocolate malt and rub your toes on a pug’s belly. 🙂

HA!!! That is the best thing ever – slupring the malt and rubbing my toes on a pug’s belly? You know me well, Debbie. 🙂 And yes, we’ve been trying to think about the electricity conversions when planning for our year. It’s likely we’ll just end up buying most of our appliances when we get there.

yo, so i’m from the phil, and yup, it’s 220 volts here. and as this is the tropics, let me tell you: summer is very hot -reaching up to 38 degC- and rainy season is, well, very rainy, and in-betweens are humid. fridge, ac, and electric fan might be your priority. and as i’m a local, i don’t think i know/notice anything that should be wildly different from what you’re used to. enjoy your stay! btw, this is cooked tofu, right? i mean, ready to eat?

I’m all for chocolate in the morning! That looks delicious.

I can only imagine how stressful this whole process can get. But it will be all worth it… it would be a great adventure!

Oh man, I hear ya on the house hunting abroad thing- I had to do that when I went abroad (to Paris- totally different than the Philippines, I grant you that) and it was such a stress. I’m glad you found a place! And it even has overhead lighting!

I just read about your story from a previous post and I am so happy for you! So exciting and rewarding to follow such an opportunity. It would be a dream for me to do what you are doing! Enjoy an extra chocolate malt for me! (I just found out that I’m allergic to chocolate…boo). And I LOVE the beautiful kiddie pics. 🙂

Thanks Michelle! I cannot even begin to imagine life without chocolate. Please tell me there are some alternatives out there for you?!?!

      1. Pinch of Yum Logo

Sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner! Well, being without chocolate has been interesting. I have learned to love and appreciate vanilla even more! White Forest cake instead of black forest cake is really nice. The last 6 weeks, I even cut out gluten, eggs and dairy…which meant VERY creative baking! Gluten-free and vegan baking has been a very neat challenge. Fruit pies, crisps, pumpkin pie and gluten-free/vegan vanilla cupcakes… I’m re-introducing wheat, eggs and dairy back slowly this month. It’s nice to try new recipes as there is a little boy in my son’s class that is allergic to wheat, dairy and eggs. It is nice to make something for him too so he doesn’t get left out when I bring goodies. 🙂

Thank you for sacrificing by tasting all those malts for weird tofu taste! Your adventure sounds exciting and I can tell you have such a heart for the children. Praying for you as you continue to prepare. Stay focused. Eat chocolate.

Um, yes. Cold showers it will be. I spent 10 days in the Philippines volunteering in an orphanage when I was 19. I’ve never taken shorter, colder showers. Enjoy, my Dear! 😉
Will you be able to find all those ingredients over there??? I don’t even know – I never grocery shopped during my stay. I do remember they had massive fresh shrimp and armed men stationed at every business doorway. Slightly unnerving. . . . (The guns, not the shrimp. . . .)

      1. Pinch of Yum Logo

Manila was where I saw the armed guards at the stores. Getting to the little village we were in involved a looooong, bumpy Jeep ride. And possibly a puddle jumper. I honestly can’t remember the name. I’d have to go digging through scrapbooks to jog my memory.

        1. Pinch of Yum Logo

How cool! I love that you have been there, even if you can’t remember the name of the exact place. I mean, there ARE 7,000 islands… I can see how you might forget.

Can I just say that your blog is sensational?! Not only is this recipe fantastic (thanks Pinterest for this find!) but I really admire the fact that you take the time to respond to everyone, and personalize your response. You seem like a very inspiring person. Keep up the great work and I can’t wait to see what your future brings!
