Remember that whole apple dessert for breakfast thing?

It’s become a more than just a Friday thing.

It’s an every day obsession.

I’ve always loved oats. Not hard to do when your two favorite toppings are butter and brown sugar.  But in all my oatmeal life I have never made an oatmeal variety like this bran oatmeal so. many. times.  It started with days, and moved to weeks, and I’m now going on a month of this deliciously cozy breakfast.

I think that qualifies as an obsession.

And here’s a little secret.  Sometimes I curl up with a blanket and completely ignore my dinner plans and make this instead.  Woops.   I guess obsession might be an understatement.

Brown sugar apple bran oatmeal with honey drizzle.

PS. Grated apples are my new favorite thing – they add natural sweetness and a great texture!  Yum.

PSS. There’s bran in there. It’s healthy.

PSSS. There’s butter and brown sugar in there, too. It’s healthy for your soul.

Brown Sugar Apple Bran Oatmeal


Description

This brown sugar apple bran oatmeal combines the sweetness of grated apples with the nutty flavor of bran and oatmeal. Easy and delicious!


Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 small to medium apple, grated (large, not too fine)
  • 1/3 cup oats
  • 1/4 cup bran cereal (All Bran or Raisin Bran)
  • 1 cup water
  • sprinkle of cinnamon
  • pinch salt
  • 2 tsp. brown sugar
  • additional butter, sugar, milk or honey for topping

Instructions

  1. Cook the oats with the water and salt in the microwave for 1:30.
  2. Add the bran and cook another 30 seconds.
  3. Add grated apple and cinnamon. Microwave another 20 seconds if it’s not warm enough for you (I like mine hot)! Stir in the brown sugar.
  4. Top with butter, honey, cream or any combination of toppings that you like!

    I used to think I could take or leave apples but all the awesome recipes that people are coming up with at the moment are making me crave them! This is no exception, I’d love to have a bog bowl of this for breakfast and/or dinner!

    I love your idea of grating the apple! I think I’d prefer that to chunks.
    I’m so ready for oatmeal this fall, I had some in the car ride the other morning, but it was out of a paper coffee mug eaten in the car. 🙂

    I am working at an orchard in Hope, Maine (picking apples and pressing cider) for extra money on the weekends….and I still can’t get enough delicious apple recipes! Keep them coming!

    ps- there is an orchard in Ipswich, MA (Russell Orchards, you can google ’em) that I drive to from where I live in Maine once a year on the way to a Red Sox game. They make hot, fresh, apple cider donoughts that are a-m-a-z-i-n-g, the line is out the door on the weekends.

    I love apples! I give you permission to post them any day of the week. Every day of the week. Especially if they are as yummy and easy as this one. Grated apples are genius.

    I LOVE oatmeal. I’ve never tried putting butter on it. I’m sure I’d love it, which is why I think I’ll refrain from trying it! 🙂 I usually cook banana in mine, but I’ve done thinly sliced apples. I will have to try grated apples. And since it’s healthy, I can put as much peanut butter on it as I want.

      I know. Lately I’ve had to limit myself… I only allow butter on special mornings. 🙂 Banana is yummy, too. Have you tried egg whites?

    Lindsay, why would someone put egg whites on her oatmeal? I’m a little repulsed and a whole lot curious… On another note, I just made my billionth batch of your granola today. I eat it every single day, several times a day. So does my family. You’d think we’d be sick of it, but we’re just not. 🙂 And since I went to the orchard this afternoon, I think you just planned my Monday morning breakfast for me!

      Ahh yes. The egg whites. I’m not saying it’s my favorite thing ever, especially since I don’t love eggs. However… It does make the oatmeal super creamy (it’s not like adding scrambled eggs – they’re smooth and baked right into the oats) and it also adds a lot of protein. It’s kind of a healthy person thing to do, which is why I thought Lizabeth might have tried it. 🙂

    I don’t think I’ve tried egg whites. The idea always sounded gross to me (like Jakky). I’ve tried cottage cheese and wasn’t a huge fan of that. And now I’m pretty stuck in my ways! 🙂

    Umm, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. THUS any food that is a vehicle for apple consumption is healthy. QED. 🙂

    This sounds so amazing! Is this extremely unhealthy for you? Looking over the ingredients, it doesn’t seem so bad minus the butter or cream toppings…if I just topped it with honey, it would be pretty healthy right?
