K, Peppermint Mochas though.

They are my ultimate favorite coffee drink of all time, and they have a prime season, and their prime season is now! This is a good thing.

As soon as December hits, it’s game over for me. I will no longer order my standard, smart, responsible decaf Americano with cream for my commute over to work. That’s not going to cut it when it’s DECEMBER. In December, I need the real thing. I need all the Peppermint Mochas.

A few small problems with this situation: Peppermint Mochas day after day are 1) expensive, 2) kind of a sugar haul. When I order them at a coffee shop, I always order them half-sweet (pro tip! they are so perfectly tasty that way), but even still. It’s not like I can super-justify the Peppermint Mocha Obsession day in and day out.

UNTIL NOWWWWW. Put your jingle bells on for this one.

This Peppermint Mocha is different. I could drink this for breakfast daily and feel one hundred percent like that would be a good health decision. So many good things going on here:

  • Collagen protein – strong muscles, youthful skin, healthy hair and nails
  • Milk of choice – which, for me, is currently coconut milk and those healthy fats! yumo for my mouth and my body
  • Natural cocoa powder – antioxidants, yo
  • Agave – just a lil kiss of sweetness

Collagen protein is one of the new hot things on the healthy eating frontier – have you heard of it? Have you tried it? I have been using it on and off for the last year and a half, and while I haven’t used it consistently enough to be able to say, “My skin is amazing! My joints are so strong!” I CAN confidently say that I find it to be a really nice protein powder from a food perspective because it doesn’t taste weird and it dissolves nice and smoothly into hot or cold foods. And this is especially true with Bulletproof – the other brands of collagen I’ve tried have more of a “taste” to them, and that’s not my favorite. That’s what I like about Bulletproof specifically – smooth-dissolving and actually tasteless.

So why do people love it? Collagen is the body’s most abundant protein, and taking it as a supplement – in your peppermint mochas, obvi – has been proven to help with joint strength. But the thing a lot of people really love about it is the improvements they see in their hair and nails and skin. Fountain of youth much? I mean, one glance through the reviews and you will see that there are so many people who incorporate collagen into their diet primarily as a beauty supplement! You know, to help smooth wrinkles and increase skin moisture and thicken hair and other yummy things like that.

Frothy, creamy, holiday-vibing Peppermint Mochas that pack 22 grams of protein per mug AND beautify skin, hair, and nails?

I mean, twist my arm.

So, can we talk more about this? Have you heard of collagen? Do you use it? And if so, how do you use it? And what brand do you use? And what do you think of it? Tell me everything. I’d love to discuss.

Bulletproof Peppermint Mocha

Description

Power Peppermint Mocha! the unicorn of all holiday drinks. with 22 grams of collagen protein, which is good for joints and muscles, but also skin, nails, and hair. SO yummy!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • about a cup of strongly brewed coffee
  • 1/2 cup milk of choice (I recommend light coconut milk)
  • 2 scoops (or 24g) protein powder (I used Bulletproof collagen protein)
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon agave
  • 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Blend everything together until smooth and foamy.
  2. Pour into a mug and serve! Yummy!

Notes

You can also serve this cold which is equally as yummy. For making it cold, I just blend it hot first, then blend some ice in with it either until the ice is melted or until it takes on the consistency of an iced blended coffee. You might need a little extra coffee / agave / salt to carry the flavor a little farther with the addition with the ice.

This looks so good! I’ve been using collagen peptides for about a year and really love it for my hair. I use a different brand but want to try out Bulletproof – I’ve heard the same that it doesn’t leave an aftertaste. 🙂

I have never heard of this product before but my husband has been asking for gift ideas!!! Sending him this link for a little inspiration. I really don’t want another coin sorter this year or real & dried alligator head. Ewww.

  3. Pinch of Yum Logo

I’ve used collagen for about a year… originally it was because I wanted the extra protein boost. But my hair and nails and skin?! For real, those reviewers aren’t lying. I use a different brand and usually add to my smoothie, but the PM? Um, yeah. Gotta do that for December.

  4. Pinch of Yum Logo

This looks so delish! I can’t wait to try it, but the collagen I use does not come with a scoop – how much would you approximate each scoop being?

  5. Pinch of Yum Logo

OH I LOVE YOU FOR THIS. Peppermint mochas are my kryptonite in December! So excited to try this.

  6. Pinch of Yum Logo

Does the recipe require the collagen powder? I don’t have it on hand, but I didn’t know if it thickened it or something.

Chocolate for breakfast is always a winner. The coffee drive thru gets expensive over time. Thank you for this recipe, looking forward to the savings:) I have not used collagen protein before, this is interesting. Happy Holidays!

    This sounds incredible!!!

I have used a brand of collagen by Dr. Axe. My main complaint is that I could taste it even in smoothies. I want ALL the benefits of using collagen all of the time. I am curious to try this collagen to see if I can taste when stirred into my hot tea or oatmeal. Thanks for sharing!

Love that you’re familiar with collagen, Emily! I really cannot taste this one, and I was always able to get a subtle taste (not in a good way) from Vital Proteins so I was excited to find that Bulletproof didn’t have that issue at all.

I have been using Lindberg Bioactive Verisol Collagen Peptides for about a year. I can’t say that I notice much of a difference in my hair thickness, but the texture is somewhat smoother, and I think my facial lines around my eyes and on my forehead are less noticeable. My nails are for sure stronger. In my entire life I’ve never been able to grow my nails, but after using this my nails were long and strong with very white tips and they didn’t peel or split or break for the entire summer and fall. Now I’ve been catering a lot of parties (and hence, washing a lot of produce, pots and pans) and haven’t been good about wearing prep gloves near water so they’ve started to break, but they’re still growing faster than they used to. So collagen does do something. All the studies that were done in 2013 and 2014 specifically used hydrolyzed collagen. The scientists doing those studies don’t yet understand WHY hydrolyzed collagen supplementation works – it shouldn’t, because stomach acids break down these molecules and turn them into various peptides and amino acids, but for some reason this form of collagen does actually do what it’s purported to do. The research is easy to find online and pretty interesting to read. I think Health Magazine and Prevention Magazine have also published links to the studies.

This recipe needs a little tightening up.
    1) It says “2 scoops protein”. You should clarify this to say “collagen powder”, because some people might read it without looking at your previous intro and and whey protein, egg white protein, etc.
    2) As others have mentioned, “scoop” is not a recipe term familiar to everyone. You should use tablespoons and/or grams, those real chefs out there who have a kitchen scale.
Other than that, looks pretty yummy.

Hi John, thanks for the tips. All collagen protein powder (or regular protein powder) that I’ve ever purchased comes with a standard scoop in the bag, which is how most people measure it. But agreed that we could specify that a little more. Thanks!

This sounds amazing. I’ve been using Vital Proteins Pasture-Raised, Grass-Fed Collagen Peptides, along with Laird Superfood Unsweetened Original Coffee Creamer, and Golden Milk (a Turmeric Curcumin smoothie/tea mix). I blend it all together with my espresso and coconut creamer or milk for a delicious warming, good-for-my-skin-and-joints drink.

But now I’m exited to swap it out with this recipe! Time to mix things up.

  12. Pinch of Yum Logo

interesting about Bulletproof protein, always interesting in knowing about new protein powders (at least to me) and nice coffee twist for December, thank you!

  13. Pinch of Yum Logo

YES!!! So excited about this healthier and MUCH less expensive PM! Collagen powder (Natural Force Collagen protein) almost every day in smoothie! Thanks Lindsay and I pray that your hearts and souls will be blanked in peace as you navigate the holiday season!

  14. Pinch of Yum Logo

This looks amazing! From a health crazed chocoholic, what a great way to add some chocolately goodness into your breakfast! Plus adding the collagen is genius! I personally have been using Vital Proteins collagen peptides for over a month now and I can say with confidence that I am beginning to notice a health benefit to my hair, nails and joints! I can’t wait to join the club of other people who have been using them for a year.

    1. Pinch of Yum Logo

Isn’t it crazy? The comments that you read on both Bulletproof and Vital Proteins on Amazon are insane. In a really good way. Thank you, collagen!

  15. Pinch of Yum Logo

    Hi Lindsay,

This looks great. Are you using light coconut milk from a can? Or are you using boxed coconut milk? Thanks!

    1. Pinch of Yum Logo

Light coconut milk from a can! Also works with almond milk or any type of milk, really. But I prefer whatever milk it is to have some fat with it.

  16. Pinch of Yum Logo

If you get a lot of responses for how to use collagen, can you do another post with those as like a recap? I’m hesitant to buy it without knowing I will find ways to use it consistently. Thanks if you do!

    1. Pinch of Yum Logo

Love that idea Laura! I am less confident about using it in savory food just because, I don’t know, I’m not used to the idea of it, but it does dissolve so smoothly into hot OR cold foods and I think it would make a great addition to, say, Golden Soup! 🙂 Or something similar.

  17. Pinch of Yum Logo

Interesting…I’ve been using whey protein powder but this may be worth investigating. I’ve seen these roller things with teeny needles that you’re supposed to use on your face to help promote collagen production, but this terrifies me more than a little. I could get down with this option.

      1. Pinch of Yum Logo

I can’t wait to try this one as peppermint mochas are my favorite holiday treat! P.S. I can hook you up with one of those derma rollers is you are interested. I have been using one for about 4 year and I LOVE it.

  18. Pinch of Yum Logo

Yess, I love collagen! I haven’t tried Bulletproof collagen yet (I do like Vital Proteins and Further Food’s marine collagen), and this peppermint mocha sounds absolutely amazing for winter! Yum!

  19. Pinch of Yum Logo

    Dear Lindsay,

You are on to something here. Warm protein beverages. Perfect for those of us in colder climates. I don’t know about you but I can’t quite muster a cold protein shake during the winter. Looking forward to trying your peppermint mocha and hope you will follow up with more warm protein beverage recipes. Happy holidays!

    1. Pinch of Yum Logo

SAME. And to be honest, I can’t muster a protein shake even in warm weather. Sometimes the taste is just too much. Enter: tasteless collagen! 🙂

  20. Pinch of Yum Logo

i tried collagen peptides (Vital Proteins) about 2 months ago and i can’t believe how much stronger my nails are! i really like collagen for my morning smoothie as well because it is relatively low calorie for the amount of protein it packs! looking forward to trying this!

    1. Pinch of Yum Logo

Agreed! And love how it blends in so smoothly and is tasteless – especially the Bulletproof stuff that I’ve been using. Thanks for sharing Jenn!

To be honest, I never personally heard of Peppermint Mocha drink. My personal opinion of this is it looks good in the photo. It resembles rich hot Chocolate. I’m wondering if this Peppermint Mocha drink will do good for people who strive to keep their breath fresh. lol

What do you think? Will it work? lol 🙂
