December Income Report – $4,277

Creating an Income from a Food Blog - December Income.

Bjork here. I’m Lindsay’s husband and the Official Grocery Getter here at Pinch of Yum. How do I get this honorable title? The equation is quite simply, actually: 1 motorcycle + 1 Filipino license = Official Grocery Getter.

Once a month I take a break from my intense grocery getting duties and write a post that reveals the income and traffic from Pinch of Yum’s previous month. Our hope is that these monthly income and traffic reports are inspirational and educational.

Inspirational in that you can see that’s it’s possible to create an income from a food blog and educational in that you can see where the income we’re earning is coming from.

Last month we challenged readers to put together a recipe video. It was awesome to watch all of them (which I did…every minute of every video)! I’ve embedded the videos at the end of this post. Be sure to check them out and leave a nice comment for those that submitted a video. 🙂

After all of the recipe videos you’ll see a screencast from me that explains how food bloggers can create income from these videos.

But first, let’s have a look at the numbers.

Creating An Income From Recipe Videos

As the folks who submitted videos know, creating a recipe video is a lot of work! Wouldn’t it be nice if you could create some additional income when you put the time and energy into making one?

The video below shares an idea you can use to help create an income from your videos by including affiliate links in a YouTube videos description area.

Thanks

As always, thanks for reading! I’m off to record some more Food Blogger Pro videos. 🙂

Thanks for including my video! Love these income updates – it’s amazing how consistent the earnings from Blue Host are and of course must be great to see the hard work from the Photography book paying off! I’ve mostly been making money through adsense, Blog Her and sponsored posts/contextual links but it still doesn’t come anywhere close to your income (though to be fair neither do my monthly page views)!

I love how your income sources are fairly evenly split. Obviously TFP is a big contributor but I would be happy with just your Bluehost earnings – even the adsense is more than most bloggers. Keep up the good work.

Thank you so much for including my video with my son! I truly enjoy making these with him and just want to share them with everyone. I look forward to watching the video about making some money from videos.

How did I not know you could put affiliate links into youtube descriptions?! I’m actually a Blendtec affiliate and have been trying to figure out the best way to optimize my efforts… this is perfect! Already added. Thanks Bjork – you ROCK!

Thanks for the monthly report Bjork! I always find these posts very helpful and motivating. Although my blog is just in the very early baby stages, I know with hard work and dedication that it may one day earn me some money.

I purchased the ebook in December and have found it to be very helpful, can’t wait for the updated version.

Thanks, Bjork, for all your hard work. 🙂

And I had no idea that you could add affiliate links to YouTube! I’ve never actually uploaded anything onto YouTube, but I somehow never noticed them.

And whoa at earning more with Google Adsense than with BlogHer. Interesting!

Thank you for showing my video. That’s great advice to put an affiliate in the youtube description. I used pretty links for my links to my green thickies challenge. I’m never sure where to direct people back to my website or straight to Amazon. I think in the long run I’d rather have people come over to my website and become regular readers and share my content with others.
I’m also an affiliate for blenders as my smoothie website lends itself directly to this. I hope to also get a book out soon and I really look forward to these posts for some inspiration. Many thanks!

Thank you for this post. It is very encouraging for me (an extremely new blogger) to see how you can make revenue from a blog so you can fund your true passion — giving back to others. I do have a question — BlogHer’s website says they’re looking for sites “hosted by a service that allows your own advertising (wordpress.com does not) and does not place other graphic ads at the top of the page.” I could be totally wrong, but are you using WordPress or another platform? Since you mention the Thesis Theme, I thought you were in WordPress, but then that contradicts what BlogHer says they support….or at least I think there’s a contradiction. Thank you again for your wonderful blog. I love getting recipes from it and am inspired at what it allows you to do overseas.

Hey Bjork, great info here. I’m starting a cooking site with my gf and we plan to monetize the site with Adsense, Clickbank, and Amazon. Please let me know if you run anymore recipe contests so we can submit a video! Thanks

Oh darn totally forgot to send you guys a video I made too. Oh well. It’s on my blog if you wanna see it, I recorded how I make my favorite snack. I’d send a link in here but I’m on my iPad and I don’t know how to do that haha.

Great post again. Too bad for amazon affiliates not working in Illinois so i can’t use your YouTube descriptions tip 🙁

Man, you guys are awesome. Not only do I love reading each of your recipes, I also enjoy your Monthly income reports. They are very informative, inspirational and educational. Thanks a lot!

So… it’s dinner time, and I decided to try your “healthy sweet potato skins” recipe that I found on Pinterest. I cook almost exclusively from recipes collected on Pinterest. So, I wander over to your website here at Pinch of Yum to look up the ingredients, and see the amazing work ya’ll are doing in the Philippines! So awesome! And then I get to thinking… you could really increase your site traffic by posting your recipe photos on Pinterest. It’s not a huge time investment, and would keep your blog continuously in front of a wider audience. Blessings to you guys! And keep up the good work.

Hi Jess! Pinterest has been a huge source of traffic for me even though I’m not even a Pinterest user/pinner. So weird how that works! I have mixed feelings about using it myself but I sure appreciate people pinning my recipes! 🙂 Thanks for the nice comment!

Lindsay, thank you for everything you are doing. I have been following you for a few months now and you have been an inspiration to me. I started my blog 6 months ago (ourfullplate.com) and I love blogging. The only thing I hate about blogging is I can’t afford to do it full time…YET and I know that now because of you. I thought that there would never even be a possibility, until I read your blog. I am an Active Duty Army officer, mom to two beautiful boys, wife, CrossFitter, and now newly turned to the Paleo lifestyle. I am busy as a bee but I know I am not the only one. I started my blog to show people cooking healthy doesn’t have to cost a fortune or take a lot of time. As I write, I noticed today was my most popular day, almost 800 views. I know it is not a lot but hey it’s a start. I applied to BlogHer because of you (crossing my fingers). So basically I just wanted to say thank you again and keep doing what you are doing. You are inspiring women like me to get out of their comfort zone and help others.

Thanks for your nice comment Laura! 🙂 We love hearing that these resources are an encouragement to people and it’s always awesome to “meet” people like you who are now pursuing their own blogs with a passion. And congrats on your high traffic day – 800 views is a high number for only having started 6 months ago!

Wow! What a great birthday surprise! I missed this post because I was travelling home for a funeral. This sure brightened up my day. 🙂

  14. Pinch of Yum Logo

Thank you so much for sharing your resources and income info. It’s so inspiring to see that you’re generating income by doing something you love, and doing it really well 🙂

    Aloha!
Stopping in again to try to learn a bit from you guys! 😉 My husband just read through this with me, and he agrees that you are pretty awesome for sharing so openly. He’s watched me try to figure things out and this is such a blessing!!

Dave (my husband,) also said to tell you that you are welcome to come visit us on the north shore of Oahu on your way back to the mainland if you have time to stop! 🙂 Haha.. I guess he figured out that he likes you pretty quick!
I’ll be back around. Thanks a ton.
    God bless,
    Monica
