I came home from vacation craving oatmeal.
I’ve already been told by my husband that this is weird. Just let me explain myself.
The only time I ordered oatmeal on the trip was during a breakfast-on-the-go stop at Au Bon Pain. But first of all, eating in the car takes some of the joy away from the overall oats experience.
And secondly, I quickly realized that, while I love Au Bon Pain, their soupy oatmeal needed some major doctoring up with…. granola and almonds? Let’s just say the oatmeal topping bar was a bit sparse.
I think it was at this point on the trip that I declared myself an oatmeal snob.
And I’m not done yet.
To add fuel to the “I-crave-oatmeal” fire, there was a lot of this going on during our vacation. Which was amazing.
But it’s only amazing the first five times.
One more thing – did I mention that we were welcomed home to Minnesota by a lovely summer temperature of 60 degrees?
So now you can see why I came home craving a big bowl of warm, creamy, nutty power oats.
I’m not crazy. Right?

Another reason to crave healthy oatmeal: I’m about to head out for another weekend getaway with beach, friends, and more eating out! Yikes.
What’s your go-to healthy meal? I’m going to need it next week!
I love oatmeal too – especially when it’s cold (I’m originally from WA State) but now I’m in FL and have it cold usually (overnight oats are awesome). I will give this a run tomorrow! I’m so excited to have some new oatmeal recipe to fall to. 🙂
Thanks for posting!
Yay!! I had this for breakfast, and just noticed that you posted the recipe on our wedding day! We own June 24, 2011. Lol.
This might be a silly question, but can you use quick oats? Thanks!
Hi, Justine! The cooking time will be slightly different (shorter) but that should work. We prefer the texture of rolled oats, but quick oats would be OK in a pinch. 🙂
I just made this and it was super yummy! It’s getting cooler here in Australia so it warmed me up beautifully. Can I just ask how much you beat the egg white? I kind of guessed and it worked out ok but wanted to check how much you beat it pls. (also I tried microwaving it first and it blew up!! Obviously need to work on that lol)
Can you use steel cut oats?
Steel cut oats should work, but the cook time will probably change. We’d suggest checking out the package instructions.
I never could have guessed you could put egg whites in oatmeal. Never. But it’s so good…
