This is great! I’d been looking for a good post-swim breakfast and this was really convenient. I added chopped apple and dried cherries. It was excellent. Thanks!
Mornings just got 100x better and this is a fact.
I want you to know that nutritious breakfasts AND easy non-stressful mornings can be found in the form of something magical and beautiful called chia overnight oats, and do we love oats for this or what? WE LOVE OATS FOR THIS.
Also, you should really take it seriously anytime I give you advice on non-stressful mornings because I am about the last person ever who is qualified to train others on such a thing. If even my hot morning mess self can make my mornings less stressful, then basically anyone in the world can jump on this real food and convenience wagon and rock their mornings with me.
My relationship with oats is probably best labeled as hot and cold. I loved hot oats more than any other food for several years. Like 9+ years. I would eat hot, cooked oats for breakfast, lunch, and even DESSERT after dinner. I’m not kidding. It was the best of times. Things were hot.

Then something about my tastebuds sort of changed and developed (scary and exciting times!) and COLD oats came into my life.
Enter: my new way to love oatmeal –> chilled, creamy, barely sweet overnight oats.
I really credit the overnight oats with bringing me to a balanced oat-loving center. The hot oatmeal was perfect for the cold mornings of winter, and the creamy, soft, lightly sweet and berry-topped soaked oats were just everything I needed and more on a sunny spring or summer morning. Not only for a good breakfast packed with nutrition and easy to work with on the hurry-up-and-get-there morning run-around, but also for keeping my adoration of all things oatmeal going during all seasons of the year.
And adding chia?
Just an awesomely fun bonus and a good reason to add the word gelatinous to your vocabulary.

So in the name of overnight oats, here’s what I do at the start of every week.
- I get out three glass jars.
- I put 1/2 cup oats in each jar.
- I put 1/4 cup chia in each jar.
- I pour in 1 cup milk or almond milk (or water if the fridge is especially empty) to each jar.
- I stir in a pinch of salt, a pinch of cinnamon, and a quick drizzle of maple syrup.
Then I wake up in the morning and I open the fridge to THREE BEAUTIFUL JARS of chia overnight oats and I grab one of them, stir it up with my leftover smoothie from the day before or maybe a quick fresh berry puree or mash up if I have three extra minutes to spare, and then eat it happily all in about 6 seconds flat.
Soooo mornings are looking pretty awesome right about now, right? I’d say YES considering I’m sitting here with this morning’s overnight chia overnight oats as I send you on your merry overnight oats way.
LOVE U, SUMMER!

Berry Chia Overnight Oats
- Total Time: 10 minutes
- Yield: 1 serving 1x
Description
Chia Overnight Oats made with chia, oats, and almond milk. So easy and perfect for a quick healthy breakfast on the go! YUM!
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup Quaker Oats rolled oats
- 1/4 cup chia seeds
- 1 cup milk or water
- pinch of salt and cinnamon
- maple syrup or other sweetener to taste
- 1 cup frozen berries of choice (or yesterday’s smoothie leftovers)
- yogurt for topping
- berries for topping
Instructions
- Place the oats, seeds, milk, salt, and cinnamon in a jar with a lid. Refrigerate overnight.
- Puree the berries. (I usually incorporate this into my smoothie routine, so I either use leftover smoothie or just blend up a huge smoothie batch so I have a little extra for the oats. You don’t HAVE to do this, but it’s a nice way to add some fruit and color.)
- Stir oats with your frozen berry puree and top with yogurt and more berries, nuts, honey, whatevs you like.
Notes
HIGHLY recommend making this in batches. I usually do 3 at a time, all in individual jars for easy grab and go breakfasts.

An absolutely phenomenal recipe! I loved this. I added leftover blueberry banana smoothie I had made. I will definitely be making this again. Thanks!
A waste of good ingredients. If you cannot manage to cook some oats (preferably good Scottish or Irish) just put fruit on some cold cereal instead of forcing down slush better topped with a trashcan lid than good fruit that never did anything bad to you.
I’m new at this & I need to have an anti inflammatory medeteranian diet as a new healthy way to eat.
Great recipe! I can’t stop making it.
I use sprouted whole oat grouts with all your other ingredients. Much greater nutrition.
Pretty high in calories for breakfast.
I’ve been doing 1/3 cup each of oats, lowfat Greek yogurt and almond milk, plus 2 tbsp of chia seeds. Including fruit and a sprinkling of granola, it comes in at around 300 calories.. Still nutritious, still a LOT of food, but far fewer calories. I tried your recipe, but it came out too soupy for me.
great article. thanks
good receipe for a sweet breakfast, thanks
Thanks for the recipe! But personally for me it was wayyy too many chia seeds. I made a big batch for the week and the one I just ate formed balls of crunchy dry chia seeds in the middle and the pudding was like 90% chia haha it was bitter and hard to eat. After I took out the clumps it tasted okay though. I looked it up after i made it and the recommended serving of chia is 1.5 tbls twice a day. i think when i make this again I will do 1.5 tablespoons & a lot more oats!
Do you think steel cut oats would work for this? Could you heat it up in the AM or do you only eat them cold? Thanks!
We’re not sure if steel cut oats would give you the same texture or not. You could definitely heat them up if in the morning if you prefer though!
I find that the steel cut oatmeal pairs with the texture of the chia seeds more so than the Old Fashioned.
Hey, just letting you know that there cant possibly be over 600 calories in this recipe for 1 serving. Might turn a lot of people away from this, so I would fix that!
Just updated that. Thanks, Nora!
Hi Lindsay,
Do you use whole Chia seeds or crushed?
We used whole chia seeds for the oats. 🙂
Nice recipe but way too much chia seeds for me and the hubs! We both found it too bitter and inedible. Will make it again with 1 tablespoon seeds and flavored yogurt.
This looks amazing. I love oatmeal, had some today despite the warm weather, but your recipe is a better idea. How do you think making this in a larger batch would work?
So delish! I used frozen cherries and almond creamer, because that’s what I had on hand, and added a dash of almond extract. It tasted like a cold cherry crisp! Even some of my guy coworkers loved it when I shared. Side note: oats are naturally gluten free it’s just how they are processed that “contaminates” them. You can find gluten free oats at most stores but by all means please correct me if I’m wrong. Thanks for this recipe!
I have been using this recipe and it is a nice breakfast- fast and good. BUT just noting that the recommendation for chia seeds is 2 tablespoons a day- not 1/4 cup. Too much can cause bloating and constipation. Be careful 🙂
this good create an event at home, thank you for the recipe
what are alternatives to chia seeds ?anyboby who knows let me know.
I have been searching everywhere for a recipe like this – I should have known to come to your blog first! Have you tried it with quinoa instead of oats? I may try it with almond or coconut milk too as I’m experimenting with making my own at the moment. Thanks for this!
We haven’t tried it with quinoa, but that would be delicious as well!
Thank you for posting the berry chia overnight oats recipe (and many others in the past few years). I had never tried overnight oats before, and I immediately became a fan. That’s a big serving for me but makes 2 nice-sized ones. Also, I didn’t have whole chia seeds on hand when I tried this the first time but used ground chia instead. After trying it with whole chia seeds, I prefer the ground version (but I use a T. or so less). Keep the great recipes coming, appreciated!
This is great! I’d been looking for a good post-swim breakfast and this was really convenient. I added chopped apple and dried cherries. It was excellent. Thanks!
photos looks so awesome.. recipe too looks delicious
I like your suggestion to use this different type of oats. Hope i will use it soon in my daily diet.
Love these ready-to-go meals! Instead of 1/2 cup of oats, I substitute a 1/4 cup oats and 1/4 cup muesli from a fantastic Minnesota-based company, Seven Sundays. I used their Blueberry, Lemon, & Chia one. Little extra texture and flavor with the dried fruits. Delicious!
We LOVE Seven Sundays. 🙂 Glad you’ve enjoyed these!
