Gingerbread French Toast

Time for Christmas listing.

This year, that means ordering a few smallish, lightish things on Amazon and having them shipped to family and friends, also known as I’ll just give you a real present next year.

Followed by a trip to the zoo mall to buy waveboards, remote control cars, and watches for the kids at the orphanage. I’ve been asking around with the preteen kids to find out everyone is hoping for this year, and some of their gift ideas just plain old MELT me. Like my girls told me, in all seriousness, that they want math workbooks. For working on MATH. And plain white paper, and stickers, and “ball pens”. And jeans.

Ok, fine, I’ll buy it all for everyone.

{I honestly did not start out this post with the intent of sharing these links with you, but so many of you have generously asked about it before that I feel like now would be a good time to mention it – the orphanage that I’m working at has an Amazon wish list, a special projects donation page, and a child sponsorship program if you are interested in being a part of our Christmas giving here at the shelter! Thank you to those of you who have already expressed interest!}

High on my personal list this year:

  1. Cheap bronzer. I’ve been hibernating in the air conditioning for the last 6 months.
  2. A new pink water bottle filled with pink Gatorade, except I don’t even like Gatorade. What? The Philippines confuses me.
  3. BT McElrath Salted Toffee Dark Chocolate bars, frozen. I hope I die with one of those in my mouth.

In other news, did you know that the only thing better than eating Gingerbread French Toast in your red thrift store Tshirt and striped pajama shorts is watching it happen all over again on your iPhone, set to twinkly music, so many times that your husband asks you to put in headphones?  Well, it is.

How To Make Our Gingerbread French Toast:

Sweetened condensed milk, powdered sugar, and maple syrup. It’s like my life just flashed before my eyes, in the best possible way. It’s also like we have ants now.

But anyways.

You probably need to get going on your gingerbread. Oh happy day!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 eggs
  • 3 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 loaf gingerbread

Instructions

  1. Whisk the eggs, sweetened condensed milk, and vanilla together.
  2. Cut the gingerbread into slices. Heat a tablespoon of butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat.
  3. Dip each slice into the beaten egg mixture and turn over several times until well saturated. Place immediately in pan one piece at a time and cook for a few minutes. When the back side is golden brown, flip and cook again until both sides are golden brown and set. Keep in a warm oven until ready to serve.

Oh this sounds like the best idea ever! The only thing that I can of that’s better than gingerbread is sweet and sticky gingerbread french toast.

PS that twinkly music is going to stay in my head all day and I love it!

I need to make your gingerbread & who knows if it would ever even make it to the french toast stage before being gobbled as-is. Both this and that look amazing! Love the sweetened condensed milk in the recipe, too 🙂

I was accidentally called “Mrs.Ostrom” again today. I love it when that happens. You may be living a zillion miles away, but we think of you all the time! On a food related note… I’ve never seen a loaf of gingerbread in a store. Is it sold in the bakery, like a nut bread?

I don’t know, actually! I just made this loaf as a quick bread last weekend and had some left over. The gingerbread recipe is linked above the french toast recipe. But this would be amazing with any quick bread, really… banana bread… zucchini bread… yummm 🙂
