Curry Hummus!
And Gluten Free May!
So here’s the deal. I am not gluten free. I am not an expert on gluten free. I acknowledge that gluten free diets aren’t just trendy but really important for some people, and I also acknowledge that gluten is not the food of the devil.
All that being said, there was some nice things happened when I opted to dip my toes in the gluten-free waters a few weeks ago.
Nice things list:
- You magically eat more vegetables.
- Your tummy feels good.
- You get more creative because you cannot default to bread and company.
- You remember that you actually do, in fact, love other foods besides bread.
- You wake up one day and feel proud of all the good food you’re eating.
- Hey, vegetables. Hey, eggs. Hey, other real foods. Your body is loving you for this.
I didn’t really have a reason to try going gluten free other than feeling like I had gotten a little off-track with my eating in the four months since we lost our son, Afton, and I wanted to right the ship. Get the body back in its groove, you know. I was searching for that kind of feel-good thing that I hadn’t had for… a long time.
Going gluten free for a short while wasn’t necessarily the magic bullet that got me back to ground zero, but it was a helpful way for me to structure my meals. I had started defaulting to bread, and lots of bread, and lots of related bread products during a season when what I needed was comfort food upon comfort food. And I’m not regretful about that in the least. I needed bread during that long winter – sometimes a plain piece of toast with butter was all I could eat.
But as spring emerged, both emotionally and seasonally, opting out of bread and other gluten-y stuff gently lifted me outside the box and reminded that there are also other foods that I do love to eat that aren’t some variation of buttered bread, noodles, and the likes.
FOR EXAMPLE.
I made this lovely curry hummus because I wanted to put it on a wrap (and I DID put it on a wrap and you’re going to love that wrap – patience, grasshopper), but then it was so beautiful and tasted so yummy that I thought the curry hummus deserved its own post. I would absolutely consider this a summertime stocked-fridge staple since it makes an impromptu mid-morning snack or a spur-of-the-moment happy hour a total reality in your life. And luckily, it uses ingredients that many of us POYers probably have on hand at any given moment.
Curry paste. Curry powder (yes, I like both in there). Coconut milk. Chickpeas. Garlic. Lime, right? Gosh, I love me some fresh lime. And something for heat. What’s your poison? I like a pinch-full of cayenne pepper.
Whether you dip with raw veggies or root vegetable chips – because, you know, CHIPS – you will be rocking out with the curry vibes on this one. Mwah.
PrintCurry Hummus
- Total Time: 10 minutes
- Yield: 12 servings (about 1/4 cup each) 1x

Curry Hummus! smooth, creamy, and perfect for a healthy snack or in a wrap for an awesome lunch. gluten & dairy free. YUM.
Ingredients
- 2 14–ounce cans chickpeas, drained and rinsed
- 1/2 cup coconut milk (more as needed)
- 1 1/2 tablespoons red curry paste
- 1 tablespoon curry powder
- 1 clove garlic
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
Instructions
- Blend or pulse in a food processor until smooth.
- Add more coconut oil, olive oil, or water to loosen as needed, depending on how thick you want it. The end!
Notes
I like to add a little squeeze of lime and a pinch of cayenne for extra heat.
Most curry pastes use shrimp paste, so if you need this to be fully vegetarian or vegan, you gotta make your own curry paste or buy a vegan one.

One More Thing!
This recipe is part of our collection of best healthy snacks. Check it out!
Coconut milk is so smart in this!!! Love it!
I so want to stock my fridge with this! The coconut milk addition sounds downright perfect, too. I would have never thought!
Love the addition of the coconut milk! Bet that would be a good base for many different hummus flavors 🙂
So funny, I always tell my clients there is no harm in trying things with your diet, none at all! Going gluten free – or processed food free- can help you improve your diet. I think people get tripped up when they buy ALL THE GLUTEN FREE junk food aisle!!! Gluten free cookies = cookies. This hummus looks amazing, looking forward to your recipes!
Yup. Not gluten free here either, but eating “real food” does make you feel better. Pushing 40 now and wow, what a different it makes….the food you feed you body is food needed as fuel. Eat to make you feel well and with recipes that tickle your taste buds like this…perfect.
Thanks!
That is SUCH a beautiful picture of the platter – it makes me want to eat veggies and make that hummus RIGHT NOW!!
Right!? Hope you enjoy it, Jennifer!
WOW! This looks so amazing. I love hummus and I’ve just recently started experimenting with making my own, I’m making this next for sure!
How could you NOT want to eat veggies when you make them look this pretty?!
This hummer looks amazing! I am thrilled about this new series! Going GF isn’t a necessity for me either, however, I love the way I feel when I omit gluten from my diet for a period of time. This series couldn’t come at a better time for me as I was just thinking the other day that I need to give my body a little “re-boot” again before my upcoming summer vacation. Looking forward to what you post next!
Really great hummus recipe!! Looks creamy and luscious! I love the added coconut milk!! I could snack on this all summer long!!
So that was a quick turnaround. Thanks for helping me avoid eating tonight’s dinner for lunch! I never have all the ingredients so I substituted green curry paste for red. Still delish, goes well with whole wheat crackers, broccoli and some spicy sardines! Maybe an odd combo but I’m happy and looking forward to snacking for a couple of days. Huzzah!
That’s amazing. Glad you enjoyed it! 🙂
Yum! I have tried to make my own curried hummus and it has always fallen short. I love the idea of the curry paste and the coconut milk! Oh and the lime juice instead of traditional lemon juice! Can’t wait to give this one a try! 🙂
Thanks, Emily! Hope you enjoy it!
Wow that is such an awesome way to step up regular hummus (:
I don’t eat gluten free either, but I love hummus and all things vegetables. This hummus looks delicious!
Hope you enjoy it, Katherine!
Love the idea of gluten free May! I recently stopped eating gluten to help with some health problems and it’s really working. Love finding more gluten free recipes 🙂
Hope you enjoy the series, Aimee! 🙂
This looks so good that I’ll have to make my own curry paste because it’s impossible to find such things in my small town. No complaints, though, I’m sure I won’t find it hard to use it up.
Would just make it even yummier! 🙂
I’m coming over to your place for drinks and nibbles! (I’ll bring wine!) That looks delicious!!!
I’ve just started making my own hummus and I love the thought of it being curry flavored. Also, your photos are gorgeous!
Hope you enjoy it, Lori! 🙂
Coconut milk! What a clever addition to hummus. I’m sure it’s perfect with the curry flavor. <3 I'm sure Afton's happy his mama is starting to take care of herself again.
Curious where I can find more recipes from this gluten free series!? I love this hummus recipe! Can’t wait to try more ☺️
Hi Katie! This is the first one in the series – stay tuned for more in the next few weeks. 🙂
This looks delicious and so pretty!
Thanks, Sara! 🙂
Yum! I just made this for our afternoon snack today and it tastes sooooo good! The combo of curry paste and powder really gives it a nice depth of flavor. Thanks for another great recipe 🙂
Glad you enjoyed it, Sommer!
This hummus looks so tasty and its a bit different from the normal kind (of which I eat way to much). Thank you for sharing. The plate looks absolutely amazing!

I would never have guessed this recipe had as much protein as it does! Thank you, love to skip bread too it just kinda drains energy for me at least, and love the extra spice punch too!
This looks so good! Just a question is there no tahini in this for a reason? I just assumed all hummus’ had tahini in it.

It isn’t necessary, but feel free to add it if you like the taste!
