Dear Santa,
I’ve been very good this year.
I’ve gone to the gym at least once a month.
I’ve made lots of tasty things to share with family and friends eat.
I’ve taught 24 nine-year-olds how to multiply double digits, even with distractions like silly bands, nose picking, and shredded pink erasers.
I watched all the best 90’s Christmas movies.
Best of all, I’ve only spent about $900 at Target on unnecessary Christmas decor.
Now, Santa, let’s talk about what I would like this year.
I would accept a week-long vacation to Hawaii, a lifetime supply of chocolate, a new Prius filled with a lifetime supply of chocolate, or a baby pug. I’ll even leave you extra fluffy sugar cookies. And I’ll only take 1 bite.
PrintFluffy Sugar Cookies & Vanilla Frosting
- Total Time: 35 minutes
- Yield: 24–32 cookies 1x
Description
These fluffy sugar cookies are topped with a vanilla frosting and sprinkles just like the Lofthouse brand! Super easy to make at home.
Ingredients
- Cookies:
- 1 stick butter, softened
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 eggs plus 1 yolk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 3/4 cup sour cream
- 3 cups flour, plus extra for rolling
- Frosting:
- 1/4 cup softened butter
- 1/4 cup Crisco (sub butter)
- 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons hot water
- 2 tablespoons heavy cream (sub milk)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
Instructions
- For the cookies, cream together butter and sugar. Beat in eggs, sour cream, and vanilla. Add baking soda, baking powder, and flour. Mix until a soft dough forms. Cover and refrigerate for 4-6 hours.
- Roll out dough 1/4 inch thick on a floured surface. Cut into small circles (2 1/2 inches in diameter) and bake at 425 degrees for 3-4 minutes. Wait until cookies are cool before frosting.
- For the frosting, beat together all ingredients with an electric mixer until very smooth. Frosting will set lightly after a few hours.
Notes
If you are making larger cookies, increase the baking time. For small cookies, I really only needed 3 minutes for my cookies – the ones that I baked longer than 3 minutes turned out very dry. Personally, I don’t care for these cookies plain. The frosting really makes them stand out!

Ha! You are so funny.
These cookies look like THE perfect sugar cookies!
Thanks Liz! 🙂
This made me laugh! And the cookies look very festive:-)
Thanks Becky!
These look so light and fluffy like a pillow made out of cookie. Love! Fingers crossed for that baby pug 😉
Fingers and toes. Puhleaaaaase Santa.
These look so yummy!
I love how you got them so puffy! The eggs + yolk trick maybe? Or the sour cream (my mom and grandma always added sour cream to cakes..never to cookies that I know of…) whatever you did…they look PERFECT!!!
Not sure… I just followed a conglomeration of recipes and made my own, and voila. Puffy.
That picture of the bite taken out of the pillowy fluffy cookie makes me want to jump in and eat them all up. LOVE these!
It took a lot of restraint not to eat that whole thing in one bite.
Totally with you on the Hawaii trip!!
I’d actually take just about any trip at this point!
SERIOUSLY.
yum, these look perfect!
I hope Santa brings you everything on your list – he should!!! 🙂
Crossing my fingers…
oh yum! i made sugar cookies this weekend too. delish!
Delicious and .. sugary! But it only comes around once a year, so we have to take advantage of it!
If I were Santa, I’d totally see your valid argument for getting everything you want on your list :-).
Totally. 😉
Yum, yum yum! These look so great! I love how thick the cookies are.
They were perfect for dunking in a glass of milk!
Great post. This is one of my favorite cookies. They look delicious! We have a pimento cheese quiche appetizer this week. Delcious. Come over and visit. Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas to you too!
Those all sound like great things to ask Santa for this year!
Oooh. You know how I feel about sugar cookies. I’m coming back for this recipe later, when my stomach and hips have returned to their normal size. . . because I’m going to want to eat like, 17 of them. They look like a dream!
They’ll be here waiting. 😉
I love how soft and fluffy and cakey these look. It looks like this dough would be good for a fruit pizza, too, which just gives me too many naught ideas.
AHHH GENIUS. Fruit pizza in the winter? Why not!?
This recipe is amazing.
How whimsical are these?! Love the puff!
I already got my baby pug a couple months ago for my birthday, but I think this recipe will make the rest of my holiday dreams come true. I’m going to try a little lemon extract in the frosting for added flavor. Thanks for sharing!
Nooo you didn’t!!! So awesome!! I’m obviously a little jealous of the baby pug.
Can you send me a box of these please?? It’s been wayy to long since I’ve had a good sugar cookie. Especially one with that much frosting! Swoon!!
so funny.. that was really cute. love those cookies. can’t wait for Christmas.
It’s almost here! Eeeek!
These look great Lindsay!
hi, i just wanted to know. does the crisco have to be melted?
Nope!
