I had one of those nights last night where I wasn’t in the mood to cook. I threw this recipe together SO fast. It had so much flavor and couldn’t have been easier. I’m definitely keeping this in my back pocket for those nights. It was filling and comforting and pretty healthy!

Lindsay’s Notes
Frozen chicken wontons are a staple in our freezer, but I usually just steam or pan-fry them and serve them as a meal add-on. Which is fine, but, a little boring.
Until now!
This is my new chicken wonton method – steaming them up with with a spicy sauce that is somewhere between dipping sauce and soup broth. It’s meant to be eaten in a bowl, like a soup – kinda, but it’s so much more than just broth with wontons. It’s luscious, dippable, scoopable, slurpable, and full of umami from the shiitake mushrooms and greens (like spinach or bok choy), if you choose to add some. The sesame oil gives even more depth, and the chili oil gives a bit of heat and a pop of color.
It’s a full meal, and it’s one of my current faves.
My girls can’t handle the spiciness in the chili oil, but I just steam a few of the chicken wontons for them to eat plain or dipped in teriyaki sauce, and they love it. Meanwhile, Bjork and I have our bowls tipped up to the sky getting every last lick of that spicy broth-sauce out of the bowl. No drops left behind!
How To Make Chicken Wontons with Spicy Sauce
Step 1: Cut Up Your Vegetables.
I like shiitake mushrooms (for flavoring the brothy goodness) and green onions (for topping). I’ve also loved the versions I’ve made with either spinach or bok choy!
Step 2: Sauté the Mushrooms and Wontons.
I usually start with the mushrooms in some sesame oil, and once they’re good to go, I add my wontons.
Step 3: Build the Sauce.
I add chicken broth, a bit of teriyaki sauce, a spoonful of chili oil, and a drizzle of sesame oil. It’s somewhere between a dipping sauce, a soup broth, and a finishing oil. It’s all three in one.
Step 4: Scoop It Into Bowls, Garnish, and Serve.
Serve it up, top with green onions and sesame seeds, and dive in.

Frequently Asked Questions For Chicken Wontons
I like the frozen mini wontons sold at Trader Joe’s, Costco, and/or the Bibigo brand. I prefer the chicken and cilantro or chicken and vegetable ones!
The mushrooms give a nice umami flavor to the whole dish, but if you’re not a fan of them, try using spinach or bok choy for something green instead. If you can’t find shiitake mushrooms but you like mushrooms, I’ve also used just white button mushrooms in a pinch and it worked great.
I actually really enjoy them as leftovers – I even eat them cold! The sauce does absorb a bit, but there’s enough for them to still be saucy and delicious.
There are many types of frozen wontons and dumplings – I would suggest any that have a similar cooking time of 5-7 minutes of steaming.
Yes! Use vegetarian wontons or dumplings.
Yes, they should be naturally dairy free.
The pre-made ones I buy in the freezer section are not. But you can buy either make them gluten-free, or buy them! Just use a gluten-free brand like this one.
Yes, of course! It would not be an SOS-style fast and easy recipe in the same way but it would absolutely be delicious. Here’s a top-rated wonton recipe from the Woks of Life.
This looks amazing! Do you have any SOS-style ideas for subs for the wontons? Tofu comes to mind…any other ideas?
We just use pre-made wontons here to make it SOS-friendly as-is, so we’re not sure how to make it quicker. Tofu could work!
Whipped this up tonight after grabbing a bag of mini wontons at BJs. I tossed in some bean sprouts, and loved the addition. No chili crisp for me, but it had a great flavor and a little heat without it.
Excellent! Spicy for sure, but you could always leave out the chili crisp if that’s not your thing. I gave this to my toddlers before adding that ingredient. I think adding just one cup of broth is plenty. We served ours with the Trader Joe’s fried veggie rice. Will be making again!
Wow Lindsay, this blog post can make anyone’s mouth virtually water just by looking at those delicious chicken wontons in that spicy chili sauce. Anyone who tries this recipe and will surely be adding some flavorful excitement to their next dinner! 🌶️🥟😋

Love it! Thanks Molly!
I am in a very dinner time SOS stage of life and this recipe was just perfect. So fast, easy, and full of flavor. I just pulled a few of the wontons out for the little one before adding the chili at the end.
Awesome. Thanks for sharing, Meg!
Shiitake mushroom are usually in a ~3.5oz package. Is it correct that you used the equivalent of 4 packs? This doesn’t seem right and very expensive!
If you have a Costco near you I highly suggest looking there for shiitakes! Near me in Colorado it is $8.99 for 12 or 14oz vs. $5.99 for 5oz at the grocery store! It does get expensive! Or you could get dried shiitakes online or from an Asian market. Seems like button mushrooms are a good swap too, and a whole lot cheaper.
This looks so yummy and easy to make. This is just so perfect especially for those people who likes to eat spicy food
Would pot stickers work in lieu of wontons?
Definitely!
I’ve lived all over the US and have never heard of chili crisp. Please explain!
What is Chili Crisp?
This is our favorite chili crisp! https://amzn.to/46aJwLw (affiliate link)
I tried this tonight and it was absolutely delicious! My husband and I both had two bowls and just a bit leftover for tomorrow. I will make it over and over again! Thank you for an easy, comforting dinner.
I made the vegetarian variation and it was really delicious and easy peasy- thank you! My only tip is that I used 1 cup of broth because it seemed plenty when I made the dish, but when I put away the leftovers, the potstickers absorbed the remaining broth, so next time I’d use closer to the 2 cups of broth.
Glad you enjoyed it, Dena! Thanks for the feedback!
Just made this on a Sunday of “I can’t even” after running after my toddler all weekend, and in true SOS fashion I didn’t have wontons or teriyaki sauce 😅 I subbed frozen potstickers and used the frozen sauce that came with the potstickers with a splash of mirin and honey to flavor the sauce. It was amazing! Def going into rotation as the weather cools down.
Do you really use half a cup of teriyaki sauce in this? I’ll do it I just want to make sure lol.
What kind of teriyaki sauce do you use?
Soy Vay is our favorite!
how did you make the food my home made
I made this today with some homemade vegan dumplings and it’s bomb! I really love spice so I went a bit heavy on the chili oil 😄 – perfect quick dinner when you need something good to eat 🙌🏾🙌🏾
Homemade dumplings!? Next level!
This recipe has become my staple and go to! I always have these ingredients handy.
This is a wonderful recipe to use up random bits and pieces of veg I may have at the end of the week. I follow thw recipe exactly and just swap out the veg for whatever I have on hand.
Tonight I sautee’d cabbage with garlic then did all the rest exactly the same. DELICIOUS! EVERY! TIME!😍
This is a really great weeknight dinner. Great taste! Next time I will use different mushrooms as the shitakes were leathery. I may have cooked them too long.

So good and so easy! We made this for dinner tonight. I can’t believe how good and easy it was! It took me a few stores to find chili crisp, but glad I didn’t give up. This will go 8 to our regular rotation!
Worth it!
Delicious recipe and sooo easy! I threw in a dollop of natural peanut butter and crushed peanuts on top for a spicy peanut flavour! Will make these often. Thank you!!!
Ooooh yummy! Thanks for the idea!
Hey! Excited to try this!! Question: do you guys have a home-made teriyaki sauce recipe??
We do not! Just usually use storebought for ease. 🙂
If you Google Cauliflower Teriyaki Bowls by Dishing Out Health, I used her recipe in these and they turned out fantastic!
Made this last night after thinking about it for days and it did not disappoint ! I didn’t have mushrooms, so I swapped for the Trader Joe’s garlicky cabbage (frozen) and it was excellent ! Also used their miso ginger broth, and a scoop of gochujang in place of the teriyaki. This will definitely be on repeat as a cozy quick meal ! I’m always tempted to order dumplings in curry for take out, maybe that will be next !
Wow, that sounds amazing!
Have made this 3x in the last week! Obsessed would be putting it lightly.
Love it. 😂
Loved this dish from the SOS series! I used vegan dumplings and veggie broth, and I put a small side of rice in each bowl to mop up some of the sauce. The meal came together in about 15 minutes. Delicious!
This was super tasty! I used two cups of broth and liked that it was soupier without being soup, if that makes sense lol I actually didn’t have chili crisp because my grocery order didn’t arrive in time, so I omitted it and drizzle some sriracha on top to give it some heat. I also substituted white mushrooms for the shiitake. All in all, it was amazing. I’ll make it again once my chili crisp arrives 🙂
Oops meant to give it that five star rating too!
Another POY winner! The sauce is divine!
Made this today. Delicious!!!!
Have never used the chili crisp before and it took a couple of trips to two different stores to figure out they make spicy and mild. I bought both but used the mild. The crunch really adds something to the dish. My grandchildren are going to love this.
I was so excited when I saw this recipe posted because I had the TJ’s wontons in my freezer and hadn’t tried them out yet or have any ideas on how I would prepare them. The only ingredients I needed to buy were the mushrooms. Sauces and other veggies were already on hand. This meal did not disappoint with its flavor and ease of preparation. Will def be making these many more times!
