The BEST Easy Peanut Butter Pie! A simple cookie crust under a layer of fluffy peanut buttery filling that is pillowy, light, and incredibly rich all at the same time.

When I Say Easy, I Really Do Mean Easy

Lindsay Ostrom headshot.

Like, cream cheese, peanut butter, sugar, and Cool Whip kind of easy.

If this combination makes you raise your eyebrows, you’re not wrong. But I wouldn’t lie to you: somehow this gang of ingredients comes together to make a layer of fluffy peanut buttery filling that is pillowy, light, and incredibly rich all at the same time.

It is DANGEROUSLY GOOD.

The true sign of an easy unfancy recipe: when it gets shared via text like this. This recipe lives all over the internet but for me, it comes via my friend Liz who brought this gem to dinner club a few months ago:

Peanut butter pie recipe in a text message.

Things are hard, but unfancy peanut butter pie is not. It is comforting and steady and joy-bringing. It will see us through.

Ingredients You Need

Unfancy ingredients ahead!

  • peanut butter
  • sugar
  • whipped topping
  • cream cheese
  • Oreos
  • butter (salted or unsalted butter works)

That’s it, friends. So, so simple.

How To Make This Pie (Step By Step)

1

Make The Crust.

You can buy one or make one! I like both Oreo crusts and graham cracker crusts, but I like Oreo crusts slightly more.

2

Make The Filling.

Mix up your peanut butter filling in a large bowl. Pour it in a 9-inch pie plate.

3

Chill In The Fridge.

Spread the filling in the crust and chill in the fridge for 3-4 hours, or until solid.

4

Slice and serve!

Once it’s frozen through, let it thaw for just a few minutes until you’re able to slice through (you might be able to do this right away). Serve and eat!

Variations On This Peanut Butter Pie

You could very easily make this your own. Here are some ideas:

  • Chopped peanut on top
  • Reese’s Pieces candy bits crushed up in the peanut butter filling
  • Hot fudge drizzles over the whole pie
  • Mocha Peanut Butter Pie from the archives is a fancy step up, but equally as delicious as this pie

For the rest of us, love live the simple joys of eating peanut butter pie for days!

Easy Peanut Butter Pie: Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use graham cracker crust instead of Oreo crust?

Sure! That would be delicious! I prefer and Oreo crust but both of them work.

Can I make this dairy-free?

Yes! Just use a dairy-free whipped topping and vegan butter.

Is there a substitute I can use instead of Cool Whip?

You can whip cream in place of the Cool Whip topping.

How should I store leftovers?

Just pop them in the freezer! You could even freeze individual slices if you want to be able to easily pull out one single serving at a time.

What would you recommend instead of cool whip as cool whip isn’t available in the UK

Holy moly this is AMAZING!! came out delicious even for me who is a horrible baker!

This looks delicious – and so easy! Any thoughts on whether it would work to sub out the cool whip for homemade whipped cream?

    Thanks!

      Hi Flannery,
I have made a very similar version of this pie using regular whipped cream and it was great. I definitely recommend freezing it for the best “servability”. I was impatient with my first attempt and it was too soft and blobbed all over the plate. Tasted great but didn’t really look like a piece of pie! 🤣

Thank you for another delicious and comforting recipe. Should this be stored in the freezer or fridge? Thanks!

I have been craving a peanut butter sweet treat!! This looks so good, I already planned out making it haha.

      Tara,

Next time you crave peanut butter, pick up a jar of Almond butter & organic Strawberry preserves from your local produce market or While foods. You’ll absolutely love the difference in taste! 🙂

    This pie looks delicious!
Can I replace the cool whip with whipped cream? Cool whip doesn’t exist in the Netherlands 😊.
    Thank you!

Hi, Diana and Cassandra! We haven’t tested any alternatives to the Cool Whip yet, but you could try a bit of heavy whipping cream instead. We’d love to hear how this goes for you!

      2. Pinch of Yum Logo

If you se heavy whipping cream I have fond it works very well in this pie as long as he cream is stabilized with gelatin

They make gluten free sandwich cookies (Joe-Joes at Trader Joe’s for instance)… so that would be an easy swap for a gluten free crust and therefore a gluten free pie! I’m suddenly very excited 🙂

  6. Pinch of Yum Logo

DE-LISH-OUS! Made it last night and we’ve been cutting out little slivers about every couple hours… Too good!

  7. Pinch of Yum Logo

Um… Sugar, Cool Whip & Cream Cheese?! Aww, yeah… what the heck – it’s a quarantine must! 🙂 This looks sooo good & after eating eating healthy for awhile I’m ready for – rather craving – SWEET deserts! Bring it on!! Thanks Lindsay… this looks delicious!! I love Oreos & Peanut Butter anyway & this together has my name all over it

  8. Pinch of Yum Logo

I made this today. It was super easy and the texture was great but it was too sweet for me. I wonder about cutting the sugar in half. Would that mess up the consistency?

    1. Pinch of Yum Logo

Love this peanut butter pie!!! I added a little touch to it I put Hershey syrup on top of short bread pie crust then put in freezer for 30 minutes added peanut butter pie filling on top put in refrigerator for few hour and added Hershey syrup and serve!! Yummy

Hi. If I substitute whipped cream, do I have to add anything to stabilize it?

    Thank you.

Sorry. I didn’t read the other comments about substitution before I posted my question. Thank you.

We just made this for our anniversary. We made it (mostly) vegan by using vegan cream cheese and vegan cool whip (using aquafaba). Thanks so much it was amazing! My husband is obsessed.

  11. Pinch of Yum Logo

Wow. This pie is absolutely incredible. I made it vegan with coco whip and vegan cream cheese and my entire family LOVED it!! Your recipes are all EXTRAORDINARY, and this one is no exception. Thank you!

  12. Pinch of Yum Logo

Hey Lindsay! So mom made this last week and this is now my new favorite dessert! Simply amazing!
    Thanks!! Dad

  13. Pinch of Yum Logo

Yet another great recipe! Thanks so much for sharing. It’s very easy to prepare, and I will admit the amount of sugar scared me and it was very grainy at first but after letting it sit overnight in the freezer, it tasted absolutely delicious!!

  14. Pinch of Yum Logo

Wow! I’m really excited to try this recipe. I’ve always been a huge fan of the whole chocolate and peanut butter combination thing. The only downside I could see to this is a difficulty swallowing because of the consistency. I’m suggesting a healthy glass of mil to go along with this great recipe.

Does this work if you make it one day ahead? Should I cover it in freezer with tin foil?
