Iced Matcha Green Tea Latte

This post is sponsored by Almond Breeze! We are using their Almondmilk which is delicious for an iced matcha latte.

Okay! So let’s get granola for a minute.

A toasted English muffin smeared with almond butter and sea salt is just begging to be washed down with sips of this cold, creamy, sweet, antioxidant-dense iced matcha green tea latte. It’s like the world’s healthiest form of a latte. I know you’re maybe asking questions. Raising eyebrows. Matcha is a tiny bit off the mainstream map, I get it.

But hey – can you buy almond milk? do you have Amazon? because that’s how I got started with my matcha green tea latte obsession. Look out, hippie matcha green tea latte drinkers. The food regulars be comin’ for ya.

Let Me Tell You About The Inspo For This Drink

So to set the stage. MATCHA GREEN TEA IS THE BOMB.COM.

I didn’t know about it until, like, two months ago. It all started with an obsession with a local tea bar in St. Paul, where I’d order this thing called a Royal Tea Latte (I’m speaking in past tense as if this is something of days gone by, but in reality I’m stopping there on my way home from work to get my third one this week – large plz – and I have zero regrets) and because the Royal had to brew for a few minutes, I’d sit there and watch all the other tea people ordering and navigating the scary-exciting menu of a tea bar.

And that’s when I realized: whoa, matcha.

The Matcha Deets

I started ordering matcha tea latte drinks at coffee shops. I was just curious. I found some things out.

  1. I’m going to be honest – I can’t stomach matcha green tea lattes when they’re hot. Just… too much of a green plant steaminess in my face.
  2. I do, however, LOVE love love them cold. Icy cold and creamy and sweet, perfect for sipping through a straw. Bless that green drink.
  3. Unfortunately, when served cold, there is always the danger of getting matcha green tea chunks up in your straw and, so so sorry, up in your mouth. And that brings us back to another thing I can’t stomach about matcha green tea lattes, which is, obviously, MATCHA GREEN TEA CHUNKS. Not okay.
  4. The solution to getting them just how I want them? Silky-smooth and lusciously green and cold and creamy and a teeny bit over-sweetened? The solution is making them at home. Because you can buy yourself a little packet of matcha powder and your fave creamy almond milk and be a whiz at this in less than 60 seconds flat.

Get a mason jar with a lid. Imma show you.

First:

That’s the matcha paste (you have to make a paste so you don’t get chunks) mixed with the almond milk and agave.

Lid on, annnnnnd GO.

Iced Matcha Green Tea Latte shaken in a jar with a white hand holding it up.

60 seconds later, you are sipping that matcha green tea latte like a boss.

It’s packed with antioxidants (thanks matcha!) and it’s ULTRA creamy while staying light in calories and fat (thanks Almond Breeze!) and completely plant-powered (thanks agave!) and GUESS WHAT there’s a bonus.

It has a little bit of caffeine. BZZZZZ

Iced Matcha Green Tea Latte – STUFF YOU NEED:

If you want to make things even *more* delicious and exciting, I love adding some blueberry syrup! I know, it sounds like it doesn’t work, but IT DOES.

PS. What was life before Amazon? I don’t even remember. Did you guys know about Prime Now? I can’t even. The other day I had something delivered to our studio in less than one hour and I opened the package and looked at Jenna and said: WE’RE LIVING IN THE FUTURE.

Iced Matcha Green Tea Latte: FAQs

There’s honey in this. That’s not vegan, right?

Right, adding honey to this drink doesn’t make this totally vegan. If you’re looking for it to be completely plant-based, just sub agave.

My matcha was clumpy. What happened?

If you have a mesh strainer, you can also pour the matcha latte through it to remove clumps. I am usually too lazy to get it out in the morning, which is why I just let it settle for a second and then pour carefully enough so that the little clumps just stay put in the bottom of the jar.

Can I make this into a hot matcha latte?

You can, you totally can. TBH, I can’t stomach matcha green tea lattes when they’re hot. Just… too much of a green plant steaminess in my face. But it totally works that way if you like it.

Friends! If you want the perfect matcha latte, ask the coffee shop that makes your favorite one to SHOW you how to do it! It’s actually a bit nuanced and every shop does it different. Some use a frother to get the lumps out of the paste. Some add the powder and milk straight together and steam it with a wand. Some make more of a concentrate with more water rather than a paste. Most matcha latte powders come with cane sugar mixed in already, and doesn’t necessarily need honey unless you want it extra sweet (but some higher grade ones won’t have the sugar and have a much more grassy taste). Most importantly, THERES A LOT OF CAFFEINE. Not a little like this recipe states. However, your body digests it differently than coffee caffeine…it’s sort of a low and slow release rather than the jittery high then crash of coffee (there’s science behind it I promise). Nevertheless, very much high on the caffeine scale 😉 so…this basic recipe might be fine, but I’ve learned to make it very different and quite contrary to what most websites say by asking the shop I like to teach me

I think you logged the wrong kind of milk for this? 200 calories and 6.9g of fat seems way off for almond milk and a tsp of honey

  3. Pinch of Yum Logo

Lol, your writing style is so much like me from a very long time ago. <3 Thanks for the ideas for lattés in a pinch.

I have one of those frothing thingys (from amazon of course) can I just use that to mix up the matcha and almond milk??

  5. Pinch of Yum Logo

I whisk the matcha powder first with a bit of hot water. (Matcha whisk, hello 😊) that’s how you get rid of the matcha lumps. Then, add the matcha to ice cold milk. And ohh yes, I add a drizzle of condensed milk too .

This is my first time using a recipe to make an iced matcha latte (also my first time commenting on a recipe ever). Usually I just wing it. I’m really glad I stopped winging it. This was SO much better than my attempt. I think I prefer mine sliiiightly less milky, but mostly this was perfect, and I also hate lumps in my matcha so I was stoked that there weren’t any after following this recipe. I sweetened with matcha ginger honey and it was YUM! Thank you so much for this recipe!

This is so bomb! I like Matcha, but really did not like it hot. This is made so quickly and tastes amazing. Only thing I added that was different from the recipe was cinnamon! Definitely my fav caffeinated drink now

  8. Pinch of Yum Logo

  9. Pinch of Yum Logo

Thanks for this! I had some matcha in my cupboard that I just wasn’t feeling when I was drinking it hot. It tastes great this way- added soy milk and some agave nectar and it was awesome – thank you!

I am sorry, I was so excited to find this, as i love Taste Nirvana Green Tea Latte, so I thought can I make this myself as the store stuff is expensive! I followed your instructions, and was REALLY DISAPPOINTED ! It was Horrible. I guess the Search goes on !

This is so delicious and easy!!!! Thank you so much. I love matcha tea. I add some turmeric. Yummy.

Hey there! I wanted to let you know the solution of making sure your matcha has no chunks. You have to whisk it with a bamboo whisk and mix the matcha either 1/2 tsp or 1 tsp of matcha powder and 1/4 cup of almost boiled water (175 F). You can add more water if you please. But it has to be whisked pretty good to make sure it has no clumps. And the matcha should looked frothy after whisking.

Hey Lindsey, Love the recipe !!

Could we use this recipe on our site? We are a startup company that sells Premium Ceremonial Matcha and we want to provide our customers with an all round package. So we would like to make a page with some recipes. You will then be appointed as the author of this recipe on this page and we will place a link below to your site.
I think we will both benefit from it, looking forward to hearing from you soon. 😀

Thanks in advance for your time!
    Kind regards Michiels Lynn

Hey. I clicked on this recipe for the short prep time and good reviews. But, I was not too thrilled to scroll through an annoyingly long narrative filled with ads.

  17. Pinch of Yum Logo

LOVE and SO SIMPLE to make at home! I throw everything in my blender and the entire process takes maybe two minutes. THANK YOU <3

  18. Pinch of Yum Logo

I love matcha so I tripled the recipe but found that it wasnt matcha-y enough for me so I added 2 tbl spoons and it was perfect! I put it in my protein shaker for easy mixing!

  19. Pinch of Yum Logo

Can this be batch prepared? How does it keep? I’d love to be able to prepare it for the week, and pour it ice cold from the fridge on those running late days.

    1. Pinch of Yum Logo

Sure! We’d suggest keeping it for about 5 days in the fridge in a sealed container. You might need to give it a good shake before serving to combine the ingredients again. 🙂

OMG you just taught me how to make an iced matcha latte in less than 60 sec!!! And where and what to buy Too too! Thank you!!! I just discovered my matcha passion at this place in Garden Grove CA called Bobapop and they made me my first ever iced boba matcha latte with grass jelly and boba in it. Yes! Grass jelly! Tasty, healthy and satisfies my need for texture and sweetness! Today I didn’t want to spend another whopping $6 for my large drink so decided to research on how to make it at home to save and to control the amount of sugar in the drink myself and voila! Stumbled on your page which popped up AT THE TOP of Google (good job Google for putting her recipe first)!!! I will use my cocktail shaker instead of a mason jar even though I have mason jars too. Just because…So I will have to suffer a few days (or a few hrs) without my match until I receive the Amazon order of matcha powder.
